The Peacock Volleyball team opened the 2009 St. Cloud State Tournament Friday morning by dropping a five-set thriller to Ferris State, 3-2. Upper Iowa won game one 25-17, but dropped the next two games 25-21 and 25-20. After winning game four, 25-18, UIU controlled much of the decisive fifth game, but fell just short as the Bulldogs took game five, 19-17.
Upper Iowa started the match red-hot as they recorded a .448 hitting percentage in game one and out hit the Bulldogs for the match, .242 to .237. UIU also out dug the Bulldogs 68 to 55 and recorded 3 more service aces than Ferris State.
Sophomore Sara Vance led the Peacock offensive attack as she tallied 18 kills to go along with 3 service aces. Nicky Brown added 16 kills and 17 defensive digs while Shea Meyermann chipped in 11 kills to go along with her 10 dig effort.
Senior setter Keri Vance recorded 51 assists while registering 3 of Upper Iowa's 11 blocks.
The Peacock Volleyball squad will play their second match of the 2009 St. Cloud State Tournament this evening against NSIC-foe Wayne State in a non-conference battle. The Peacocks and Wildcats are scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start.
