Final Stats
The Upper Iowa football team had different ideas about their 2009 Homecoming game versus the Huskies of St. Cloud State University. Both teams entered with 1-2 Northern Sun Conference records, but St. Cloud State proved to be too much for the home team to handle today. The Huskies dominated the line on both sides of the ball registering nearly six hundred yards of offense and accounting for eight tackles for loss on defense. Before the first quarter had ended, the SCSU offense had put four touchdowns on the board and allowed only a field goal to their hosts. The Husky offense continued to run the ball effectively throughout the final three quarters and picked up a 57-10 victory over the Peacocks. With the loss, UIU falls to 2-3 overall and 1-3 in the NSIC, while SCSU improves to 2-3 overall and 2-2 in conference games.
Upper Iowa took the ball first, but turned it over on an interception early in the drive to set up the Huskies at the UIU-30 yard line. The UIU defense played well making SCSU use 7 plays denying them multiple times at the goal line, but in the end the Huskies pushed it into the endzone to open the game's scoring.
The Peacocks took the ensuing kickoff 49 yards and got a 32-yard field goal from the foot of Jason Price to trail just 7-3. That was the closest that the Peacocks would be for the remainder of the afternoon. St. Cloud State scored 38 unanswered points over the next two quarters to push their lead to 45-3.
Upper Iowa did put a touchdown on the board in the final minutes of the third quarter when Craig Burns found John Baldwin for a 25 yard strike.
SCSU added two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter to earn the 57-10 victory. The visitors took advantage of five Peacock turnovers to score 31 of their points.
La'Mont Williams was the lone bright spot for Upper Iowa on the day as he accumulated 152 all-purpose yards including 19 yards rushing, 31 yards receiving, and 102 yards in kick returns. Full stats from the game can be found in the attached box score.
Upper Iowa will now have to travel to Wayne, Nebraska in search of their third win of the season and second NSIC victory. The Peacocks will line up against the #22 Wildcats of Wayne State next week; kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
