The Peacock volleyball team returned to Prochaska Court on Saturday afternoon to wrap up the athletic events for Upper Iowa's 2009 Homecoming. UIU had started the Northern Sun Conference season with an 0-4 record, although three of the matches were against top-ten ranked teams. The Peacocks wrapped up the homecoming festivities in style with a three-set sweep of the Beavers of Bemidji State to earn their first NSIC win of the season. With the victory, Upper Iowa moves back above .500 at 10-9 overall.
The Peacocks took set one by a 25-23 count and followed it up with a 28-26 win in set two. UIU improved their hitting percentage in set two by sixty percentage points, while BSU's percentage only improved twenty-one points. After the break, UIU came out on fire and finished the match in the third set with a dominant 25-16 victory. The UIU defense held the Beavers to just .022 hitting in the final set.
Leading the way for the Peacocks was Nicky Brown, who tallied 15 kills and 9 digs. Shea Meyermann added 12 kills and 9 digs, while Kayla Wagner drove home 10 balls and was part of 7 blocks. Keri Vance set up the offense with 43 assists, while also anchoring the defense with 12 digs. Alex Fink also added 12 digs for UIU.
The Peacocks will now get ready for a week on the road with stops at Minnesota State University, Mankato on Tuesday (8 p.m.), the University of Mary on Friday (7 p.m.), and Northern State University on Saturday (4 p.m.). All three matches are Northern Sun Conference matches.
