The Upper Iowa volleyball team completed their play in the Rockhurst Classic hosted by Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Missouri today and earned a second straight, split decision in the team's final two matches of the tournament.
The Peacocks lost their first match of the day to the Classic's host, Rockhurst University. The Hawks defeated Upper Iowa in four sets. UIU lost set one 25-17, but bounced back in set two to claim a win, 25-22, and tie the match. The Peacocks lost a close third set, 25-22, before falling in the final set 25-19. For the match, UIU racked up 44 kills and 7 team blocks, while RU registered 61 kills and 8 team blocks.
Sara Vance led the Peacocks with 14 kills, 7 digs, 4 blocks, and 3 aces. Nicky Brown also was key on offense as she put down 12 kills. Keri Vance set up the Peacock attack with 36 assists. Shea Meyermann and Danielle Gernes kept the UIU defense steady with 12 and 11 digs, respectively.
The ladies in blue bounced back in their second match with a victory over Missouri Western in four sets. The Peacocks dropped game one, 25-21, before picking up a win in the second set, 32-30. Upper Iowa took control after the break winning sets three and four, 25-14 and 25-22. UIU recorded 57 kills while hitting .361, while Missouri Western picked up 60 kills, but only hit .223.
Shea Meyermann led the Peacocks with 16 kills while hitting at an impressive .483. Sara Vance and Kayla Wagner each added 12 kills and both had great hitting percentages for the match. Keri Vance was once again the catalyst of the UIU offense with 42 assists. Defensively, UIU turned to Meyermann and Gernes again as they tallied 13 and 10 digs, respectively. Wagner also added 5 blocks to aid the defense.
Following the completion of the Classic, Sara Vance was named to the All-Classic team.
Upper Iowa's next match will be back inside the friendly walls of Dorman Gym. The Peacocks (9-5, 0-0 NSIC) will line up against the #1 Golden Bears of Concordia-St. Paul. Concordia is the two-time NCAA Division II Champions. The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start in Fayette.
