Upper Iowa Earns Split on Day One of Rockhurst Classic

The Peacock volleyball team opened play at the Rockhurst Classic hosted by Rockhurst, University in Kansas City, Missouri today and earned a split decision in two matches. Upper Iowa was able to take the first set in their matchup with #6 Washburn, but could not maintain their advantage. In the second match of the day, the Peacocks were able to sweep Fort Hays in straight sets and improved their overall record to 8-4.

Against Washburn, UIU won set one 25-18, but dropped the final three sets by scores of 25-14, 25-20, and 25-22. The Peacocks hit a whopping .517 in the first set, but cooled over the remainder of the match to hit .268 for the night.

Leading the way for Upper Iowa in their first match was Sara Vance (12 kills, 7 digs), Shea Meyermann (10 kills, 8 digs), Kayla Wagner (9 kills, 3 blocks), Keri Vance (39 assists), and Danielle Gernes (17 digs).

Against Fort Hays State, the Peacocks swept their opponents in straight sets by scores of 25-16, 25-22, and 25-23. The team's best set came in the second frame, when UIU hit .344 while recording 14 kills to just three errors.

The UIU offense was led by four players with kills including Sara Vance, Nicky Brown, Meyermann, and Wagner. Keri Vance paced the offense with 31 assists, while Brown led the defense with 12 digs.

The Peacocks will return to the court tomorrow morning for a match with the tournament host, Rockhurst, at 11 a.m. and Missouri Western at 5 p.m. to wrap up play in the tourney.
