Game One Stats
Game Two Stats
The Peacock softball team was in action this afternoon at the Eischeid Softball Complex in Fayette as they played host to the Marauders of the University of Mary. The games were a make up for the teams' original double dip that had been postponed on March 28 due to flooding in Bismarck, N.D. that did not allow the Marauders to travel. U-Mary came away with the sweep on the day and kept their hopes alive for a tournament berth. After the losses, the Peacocks fell to .500 at 22-22 and 13-13 in the NSIC.
In game one, the Marauders got on the scoreboard first with a run in the second inning thanks to back-to-back doubles by Andrea Brunskill and Desiree Smith.
Casey Coon got the bottom of the fourth started with an infield single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Meredith Ang. Ball four to Kami Appelt got away and allowed Coon to advance to third giving the Peacocks runners on the corners with one out. Erin Bennek came through for the home team to tie the game with a single down the right field line, but was caught at second trying to stretch the hit into a double. The inning ended on a ground out and the teams moved to the fifth inning tied at 1-1.
U-Mary put three runs on the board in the fifth inning thanks to a three-run homerun by Danelle Lunn over the right centerfield wall. The runs would hold up for the remainder of the game and be all the support that Brenda Langston would need. Langston threw a complete game, four-hitter to earn her sixth win of the year. The Marauder hurler struck out six Peacocks.
For the Peacocks, Christy Loan took the loss after throwing 7 innings and allowing 4 runs on 10 hits; Loan had three strikeouts.
In game two, U-Mary took a quick lead on a wild pitch in the top of the second.
The Peacocks had the bases loaded in the bottom half of the third when Kami Applet slapped a single through the left side that plated Danielle Deserasno. Erin Bennek then grounded into a fielder's choice that sent Casey Coon across the plate to take a 2-1 lead.
The Peacocks added another run on a passed ball in the bottom of fourth when Karrie Coon came home.
Maegan Lunn crushed a solo homerun over the scoreboard to cut the lead to 3-2 in the top of the sixth.
The Mauraders opened the top of the seventh with a double to left center which chased Peacock starting pitcher Erica Maisto. U-Mary added an infield hit that put runners on the corners with one out. A walk loaded the bases before Maegan Lunn singled to center to drive in the tying and go-ahead runs. U-Mary had runners at second and third with two outs when a wild pitch allowed another run to score. The game moved to the bottom of the seventh as UIU trailed 5-3.
Langston picked up the win in game two as well after finishing the game with 1.1 innings pitched. Stefani Schulte took the loss for UIU and fell to 6-7 on the season. Maisto earned a no-decision after throwing 6.1 innings and allowing three runs on ten hits while striking out two.
Upper Iowa will now have to wait to see if they will play in the NSIC Championships which will be held on Friday and Saturday, May 1-2. U-Mary must win three of their last four games to keep the Peacocks from qualifying for the tournament. Look to UpperIowaAthletics.com for all the information on this weekend's NSIC Championships.
