Game One Stats

Game Two Stats

The Peacock softball team earned a benchmark victory for their young Division II program. Upper Iowa, who handed Southwest Minnesota State their only two conference losses in 2007, added a win over #9 Winona State today in Winona, Minn. The Warriors won game one of the NSIC double header, 5-0, but the Peacocks scraped out an extra inning victory over their hosts in the second game, 3-2. With the split, UIU sees their record move to 19-17 overall and 10-8 in the NSIC, while Winona State goes to 34-9 overall and 14-4 in conference action.

In the opening game, Winona State tallied 10 hits to accumulate their 5 runs, which proved to be more than enough support for their pitching and defense. Christy Loan took the loss in the first game and fell to 9-7 overall. Loan threw 6 innings allowing all five earned runs. The Peacocks were limited to just three hits in the first game of the day. Erin Bennek picked up a double as the only extra base hit.

In the second game, the pitchers controlled the game into the sixth inning. Upper Iowa broke a scoreless tie with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning. A Trisha Hagensick single to centerfield plated a pair of Peacocks to give UIU a short-lived lead. Winona State answered with two runs to tie the game once again. Upper Iowa won the game in the eighth inning after starting pitcher Erica Maisto led the inning off with a double down the left field line. Danielle DeSerano drove the final run across the plate as she reached base on a fielder's choice.

On the mound, Maisto improved to 3-3 on the season with the complete game victory. Maisto threw 8 innings while allowing 2 runs on 6 hits while striking out 4. Kami Appelt picked up 2 hits in the second game to lead UIU at the plate.
