Game Four Stats
The Upper Iowa baseball team was swept in a four-game series at Missouri Western this past weekend. The four losses drop UIU's record to 5-7 on the season.
Missouri Western 7 || Upper Iowa 3
In game three of the four game set Missouri Western jumped out to a 5-0 lead after scoring three runs in the third and two in the fourth. Upper Iowa cut into the lead in the fifth after an error by the left fielder scored Tom Longoni from third. In the next at-bat, Kreston Albright singled to left field, scoring Ronnie Kurihara and making the score 5-2. The Griffons were able to add one more in the bottom half of the fifth but Upper Iowa responded with one run in the sixth from a Kurihara single to right field. That was the last time Upper Iowa would score, as Missouri Western took game three by a final of 7-3.
Longoni recorded three hits at the plate as well as scoring one run. Seth Fox went 2 for 3 scoring a run also. Lucas Wilsing suffered his first loss of the season, going six innings while giving up three earned runs on nine hits and striking out three.
Missouri Western - 5 || Upper Iowa - 3
In the final game of the series, Missouri Western took an early 1-0 lead. UIU quickly responded with three runs in the second inning that was highlighted by a Jarrod Esquibel RBI double and a Joe Rosalez single to left, scoring Kreston Albright and Jake Duske. Senior pitcher Greg Sieck was able to put up five scoreless innings going into the bottom half of the seventh. Unfortunately the Peacocks could not hold the two run lead as the Griffons managed to tie it up 3-3 and eventually take the game by a score of 5-3.
UIU out hit MWSU 10-6, which included two-hit performances from Albright and Esquibel. On the mound, Sieck went six innings and faced three batters in the seventh, giving up three earned runs on five hits. Relieving Sieck was Chris Wlezien, who recorded one out in the seventh but took the loss.
The Peacocks will open up their home schedule this Wednesday. Upper Iowa will host the Flyers of Lewis University at Robertson Woods Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. This weekend, Mar. 28 and 29, UIU will open their run at the Northern Sun title with a four game series in Mankato, Minnesota at Minnesota State.
