ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - The Missouri Western Griffons won their second and third games in a row by defeating the Upper Iowa Peacocks by scores of 8-1 and 6-1 in non-conference action at Phil Welch Stadium. The Griffons blasted three homeruns in the first game and got a strong pitching performance from Corey White, Ryan Carbah and David Miller to get the victory in game two. Western sits at 13-13 on the season, while Upper Iowa falls to 5-5.
Game 1
In game one the Griffons went on a two out rally in the bottom of the second as they scored four runs to take a 4-0 lead. Matt Jansen started the rally with a double to right center field and would score on a single by Cody Tipton. Tipton would steal a bases and then advance to third and home on wild pitches puting the Griffons up 2-0. Danny Conners would walk and then Brady Ellis would step to the plate and blast a two run homerun to left field to put the Griffons up 4-0.
The Peacocks would answer in the top of the third when Ronnie Kurihara singled and then scored on a Kreston Albright groundout to the second baseman.
The rest of the way would be all Griffons as Conners would hit a solo homerun in the fourth inning and Tipton would blast his second homerun of the season in the fifth to put the Griffons up 7-1 with an inning and a half left to play.
Blake Thomas would shut the Peacocks down the whole game as he pitched all seven innings giving up five hits while striking out seven. Thomas improved to 3-2 on the season with the victory.
Brian Solemsaas would pick up the loss for the Peacocks pitching five innings giving up nine hits and seven earned runs. He falls to 1-2 with the loss.
Tipton, Landi and Conners combined for six of the Griffons ten hits in the ball game, while Kurihara had two hits for the Peacocks.
Game 2
In game two the Griffons used a trio of pitchers to pick up the victory. Corey White started the game and pitched 2.2 innings giving up three hits and one earned run. Ryan Carbah would pick up the victory going 3.1 innings striking out three and giving up three hits and David Miller would pitch one inning striking out one.
Western would jump on the board in the second inning when Tipton would triple to right center and Ellis would hit a sacrifice fly to give the Griffons the 1-0 lead. The Peacocks would tie the score in the third but Western would score five unanswered runs to take the victory 6-1.
Western pounded out nine hits in the ball game with Landi leading the way going 3-for-4 with three runs scored. The Peacocks Brock Spangenberg went 2-for-4 in the contest.
Danny Bales picked up the loss for Upper Iowa as he went five innings giving up five hits, five earned runs and struck out four. The Peacocks sit at 5-5 on the season.
The Griffons will play a doubleheader against Upper Iowa University on Saturday, March 22 in non-conference action. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm from Phil Welch Stadium in St. Joseph, Mo.
