Upper Iowa (8-6) split two games in St. Joseph, Missouri this afternoon as part of the MWSU Ramada Inn Classic hosted by Missouri Western State. The Peacocks dropped their first game of the day, 4-0, to the Bearcats of Northwest Missouri State, but bounced back with an extra inning victory over Pitt State, 1-0, in eight innings.
Brittney Auten, Erica Maisto, Kerrie Coon, and Danielle DeSerano each tallied a hit in the first game of the day as the Bearcats pitcher dominated the action with 8 strikeouts in her seven innings. Stefani Schulte takes the loss for UIU after throwing 4.2 innings and allowing four runs, three of which were earned, on five hits. Maisto threw well in relief pitching 2.1 scoreless innings. Northwest Missouri scored a run in the third and three in the fifth to defeat Upper Iowa.
In the second game, the Peacocks' Christy Loan outdueled Pitt State's pitcher to earn the 1-0 extra inning victory. Loan threw a complete game (8 innings) scattering 6 hits in the shutout while striking out 3. Casey Coon picked up two hits in the game, but it was a sacrifice fly by Kami Appelt that allowed DeSerano to score from third and give the Peacocks the victory.
Upper Iowa will be back on the field tomorrow to face the Bulldogs of Truman State and the host Griffons of Missouri Western State.
