Final Stats
The Peacock women's basketball team met the Wolves of Northern State University in Aberdeen, South Dakota for their latest Northern Sun Conference game. Upper Iowa trailed by just three points with less than five minutes to play in the first half, but a 13-2 run to close out the first half put the visitors in a fourteen-point hole at the break. In the second half, came out strong and cut the gap to just four points after eight minutes of action. Unfortunately, Upper Iowa could not maintain their rally and a 15-3 run by the home team took the wind out of the Peacocks' sails. With the loss, Upper Iowa falls to 5-17 overall and 1-14 in the NSIC, while Northern State improves to 12-10 overall and 8-7 in conference action.
The Peacocks and Wolves played to a 13-13 tie to open the game's first ten and a half minutes. UIU found the range from the three-point line early as Chelsea Arndt, Britney Iredale and Paige DeVine all dialed in a long ball. NSU jumped ahead 22-14, but UIU rallied to cut the lead to just three points, 25-22, with 4:56 on the clock. Northern State once again took control and held Upper Iowa to just two points over the remainder of the half. The Wolves headed to the locker room with a 38-24 lead.
Upper Iowa opened the second half on fire and managed to cut the Northern State lead to just four points, 49-45, at the 11:52 mark. The Peacocks had outscored the Wovles 21-11 thanks to four three pointers and a pair of lay ups to pull back into the contest. Over the next five minutes, the home team regained their double-digit lead pushing the margin back to sixteen points, 64-48, with just under seven minutes to play. In the end, Northern State picked up the victory by a final score of 72-54.
For the game, Upper Iowa shot 42% from the three point line, but only managed to convert 11 of their 39 shots inside the arc.
Lana Otting led UIU in scoring with 13 points on 5 of 7 shooting, while Iredale added 12, Inga Briede netted 9, and Westgaard hit for 8. Iredale pulled down 7 rebounds, while DeVine and Westgaard each grabbed 5 caroms. Iredale handed out 4 assists and Otting dished out 3.
The Peacocks will return to Dorman Gym next weekend for a pair of games with the Vikings of Augustana College on Friday, Feb. 13, and the Wildcats of Wayne State College on Saturday, Feb. 14. Both games are scheduled to tip at 6 p.m.
