Final Stats
The Upper Iowa women's basketball squad continued their opening weekend of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play this afternoon by travelling St. Cloud, Minn. to battle the Huskies of St. Cloud State University. The home team controlled the action from the opening tip to hand UIU an 81-60 loss.
St. Cloud State raced out to a 20-1 lead over the first seven minutes of action before the Peacocks could really mount any type of an offensive charge. Buckets by Carrie Thoma, Cassandra Deiters and Lana Otting cut the SCSU lead back to 22-7 with 10:32 to play before halftime.
After the Huskies went on a 5-0 run to extend their margin to 28-7, Paige DeVine engineered a 8-0 run by dropping in four points of her own to make the score 28-14 with 6:18 left to play before halftime.
The Huskies and Peacocks played back-and-forth throughout the final six minutes as SCSU took a 37-21 lead into the locker rooms at halftime. Freshman Jennifer Herrick paced UIU with five points at the break but turnovers were the big story with UIU committing 13 which turned into 18 Husky points.
St. Cloud State shot 14-for-27 (51.9%) from the field in the first half while Upper Iowa managed a 8-of-24 (33.3%) clip from the field which included 1-of-5 shooting from beyond the three-point arc.
The contest belonged to St. Cloud State following the halftime break as they would extend their lead beyond 20 points early in the second half to send the Peacocks back to Fayette with an 81-60 loss.
Kenya Howard led all scorers with 21 points and 10 rebounds while DeVine chipped in 11 points on 3-of-5 shooting.
With the loss, UIU's record drops to 0-7 on the season and 0-2 in NSIC play while St. Cloud State improves to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in the league.
The Peacocks opens their 2009-10 NSIC home schedule next Saturday, Dec. 12 when the Bulldogs of Minnesota Duluth visits Dorman Gym in Fayette. Tip off for that contest is slated for 2 p.m.
