The Peacocks and Wolves took the floor in Dorman Gym for a rematch of their early October five setter in which Upper Iowa came out on top. So it should have been no surprise to fans in attendance that the match in Fayette today would be another very close nail biter. Upper Iowa came out on the right side of another five set match with Northern State, but had to rally from a 2-1 set deficit for the victory. With the win, Upper Iowa improves to 16-16 on the season and 7-10 in the NSIC.
The teams split turns dominating the first two sets. Upper Iowa won the first set 25-11, before Northern State took the second set, 25-19. After hitting .433 in set one, the Peacocks managed only a .114 percentage in set two.
When the Wolves and Peacocks returned from the locker rooms, both teams had a renewed focus for the third set. The Peacocks called a timeout trailing, 21-20, but NSU did not let the break stop their momentum as they closed the set out by a 25-21 count.
Upper Iowa was able to even the match at two sets apiece with a 25-21 win of their own in set four. Both teams saw their defense continue to shine as the offenses were held under .200 hitting.
The Peacocks held a 14-10 advantage in the fifth set when the Wolves mounted their final charge and cut the lead to 14-13. UIU dug in and found the final point on a Kayla Wagner kill to win the match, 3-2.
Seniors Shea Meyermann and Keri Vance played their final match on Prochaska Court and led the home team to the victory. Vance tallied 52 assists for the match and added 5 kills and 3 aces while digging 12 balls of the floor. Meyermann recorded 16 kills and had 11 digs and 3 blocks.
The Peacocks also got great play from Sara Vance (16 kills, 11 digs), Nicky Brown (17 kills, 12 digs), Kayla Wagner (7 kills, 9 blocks), and Danielle Gernes (15 digs, 3 aces).
The Peacocks have a busy final week of their 2009 season and are now only one win away from a winning season. Upper Iowa will travel to Winona State on Tues., Nov. 10, for a 7 p.m. rematch with the Warriors. UIU defeated WSU 3-0 on Oct. 30. The Peacocks will then spend their final weekend on the road at Minnesota Duluth and Bemidji State on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 13 and 14. The Peacocks lost to UMD, 3-0, but defeated BSU, 3-0, when the teams visited Fayette in late September.
