Peacocks Can't Complete Comeback Bid

Nov. 21, 2009

Box Score

Less than 24 hours after their comeback attempt against Missouri S&T came up short, the Peacock women's basketball team was back on floor Saturday afternoon to close out the 2009 Lady Miner Classic as they took on the Golden Suns of Arkansas Tech. After a competitive, yet sloppy contest, in which both teams combined for 58 turnovers; the Golden Suns came away with a 62-55 win.

The two squads traded the lead six times throughout the first half, but Arkansas Tech went on a 7-0 run late in the first half to take a six point lead, 33-27, into the locker rooms at halftime.

Neither team shot the ball particularly well in the first half, especially from three-point land. UIU was just six-for-21 from the floor at the break, while the Golden Suns went 10-for 30 while included an atrocious one-for-12 from beyond the three-point arc.

While UIU would never take the lead in the second half, they battled back to find themselves down by just a point with 34 seconds remaining in regulation. However, the Golden Suns would make all six of their free throws down the stretch to seal a 62-55 victory.

Both teams shot the ball slightly better in the second half. Arkansas Tech converted 20-of-54 (37%) attempts from the field which included 1-of-16 from beyond the three point arc while UIU shot 15-of-44 (34.1%) from the field, and just two-of-12 from three-point land. The Golden Suns committed four less turnovers than did UIU and outrebounded the Peacocks, 40-36.

Junior Cassandra Deiters led UIU in the scoring column with 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting. Kenya Howard dropped in 14 points, while Heidi McKean added 11. Howard led UIU in rebounding with seven, two of which were on the offensive glass.

With the loss, Upper Iowa falls to 0-4 on the young season while Arkansas Tech improves to 3-0.

The Peacocks will be back in action Tuesday, Nov. 24 when they travel to Des Moines, Iowa for a 7:00 p.m. matchup with Grand View University. The Vikings (6-3) will enter Tuesday's contest fresh off a 74-72 victory over NSIC-opponent St. Cloud State.
