The Peacock women's soccer team opened its final weekend of the 2009 campaign Saturday afternoon as they visited Aberdeen, South Dakota to play Northern State University in an important battle for postition in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference standings. The Peacocks and Wolves battled for 110 minutes without a goal being tallied as both teams walked away with a 0-0 draw.
Upper Iowa outshot Northern State 24-17 for the match which included a 6-3 clip in the twin overtime sessions. However, the Wolves put 9 shots on goal to UIU's 7 and earned four more corners than the Peacocks did for the match.
Peacock goalkeeper Melissa Heitzman turned away all nine of those shots on her way to earning her 10th shutout of the 2009 season.
The tenth place Peacocks still have a shot at making the NSIC tournament. Eighth place Concordia-St. Paul has completed its season and has 17 points in league play. Augustana, the ninth place team in the NSIC, has 16 points in league play and travels to #24 Minnesota Duluth for their final contest of the year tomorrow afternoon.
With an Upper Iowa win over U-Mary on Sunday, and a loss by Augustana, the Peacocks would qualify for the eighth seed in the NSIC tournament which starts Wednesday, Nov. 4.
