The Peacock volleyball team broke the program's record for wins in a season with a five-set victory in Aberdeen, South Dakota tonight. Upper Iowa earned their 12th win of the season over the Wolves of Northern State University. NSU won the first set, but UIU rallied by winning sets two and three. The home team won the fourth set, but Upper Iowa dominated the fifth and final set by a 15-8 final score. The Peacocks have now won three of their last four Northern Sun Conference matches to improve to 3-5 in the NSIC and 12-10 overall.
Northern State came out strong and claimed a 25-16 victory in set one, but Upper Iowa returned the favor with a dominant win in set two, 25-14. UIU hit .125 in the first set, but improved immensely in set two with a hit percentage of .444. Tied at one set apiece, the teams came back to the court for set three and UIU won a tight set, 25-21. Northern State would get find their stride again in the fourth set as they evened the match at two sets each. The Peacocks dominated the fifth set by a 15-8 count and closed out the match on back-to-back service aces by Nicky Brown.
For the match, Upper Iowa hit .307 while driving home 70 kills and only committing 19 errors. Northern State hit .277 while recording 66 kills and only 18 errors.
Brown was the top player for Upper Iowa on the night. The Farley, Iowa native tallied 20 kills and 18 digs while hitting .311. Brown tallied four of the team's five service aces in the match. Shea Meyermann accumulated 21 kills to go along with her 12 digs, while Maryn Fulton picked up 10 kills. Danielle Gernes led the team in digs with 20. Kayla Wagner picked up 5 blocks at the net for UIU. Keri Vance set up the Peacock attackers with 61 assists; good for a 12.2/set average.
Upper Iowa has twelve matches left on their 2009 schedule. The next two will come in Fayette this weekend. Upper Iowa is celebrating Family Weekend and will welcome Minnesota State to Dorman Gym on Friday night for a 7 p.m. match and Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday afternoon at 5 p.m.
