Peacocks Snap Five Match Winless Streak

Oct. 21, 2009

Box Score

The Upper Iowa Peacock Men's Soccer team continued its 2009 campaign Wednesday afternoon as they welcomed the Crusaders of Clarke College to Pattison Field in Fayette. Upper Iowa picked up a 3-0 victory against the Crusaders which snapped a five match winless streak, dating back to Sept. 26 when they defeated UW-Superior, 2-0.

The Peacocks netted their first goal in the 27th minute when Steve Kluck broke away from the Crusader defense and put a Zach Castor pass around the Crusader goalkeeper. Then, just six minutes later, Derek Oelmann netted a goal to give UIU a 2-0 lead heading into the halftime break. Oelmann's sixth goal of the season was assisted by Josh Danielson.

The home team struck again after halftime as Oelmann scored his second goal of the match after UIU was awarded a penalty kick following a foul in the 18-yard box to give UIU the 3-0 advantage and victory.

Even in the victory, Upper Iowa was outshot 20-17, but edged the Crusaders 10-9 in shots on goal. Both squads earned four corner kicks for the match.

The Peacocks were outstanding on defense. Goalkeeper, Andy Youde, blocked six shots in 66 minutes before handing the goalkeeping duties over to Kel Markert, who finished the shutout while making three saves.

UIU will defend Pattison Field for the final time of the 2009 campaign next Wednesday, Oct. 28, as Ashford University visits Fayette for a 3:00 p.m. match.
