Upper Iowa Picks Up Win in Final Home Contest of 2009

Fresh off a 3-0 defeat of Northwestern College on Monday afternoon, the Upper Iowa Women's Soccer team was back in action Wednesday afternoon as they defended Pattison Field in Fayette for the final time of the 2009 season. Upper Iowa defeated Clarke College, 2-0, finishing the 2009 home campaign with a 5-4-2 record.

The Peacocks blasted 27 shots for the afternoon, 14 of which were on goal; while the Crusaders mustered a meager nine shots, six of which required saves from goalkeeper Melissa Heitzman.

Sophomore Shaina Marnell opened the scoring for UIU in the 28th minute when her shot from 17 yards found the netting to give the home team a 1-0 lead heading into the halftime break. Marnell's sixth goal of the season was assisted by Jamie Krusie.

Peacock forward, Valeria Ptasinski, added an unassisted insurance goal in the 64th minute when she cleaned up a rebound inside the penalty area.

With the victory, Upper Iowa improves to 9-7-3 for the 2009 season while the Crusaders drop to 7-5-3.

The Peacocks travel for the remainder of the schedule which has four Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference matches left to be played. Upper Iowa will visit Marshall, MN for their next contest on Saturday, Oct. 24 to battle the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State. The Peacocks and Mustangs are scheduled for a 1 p.m. showdown.
