Peacocks Tie Huskies in Senior's Final NSIC Home Match

Oct. 18, 2009

Box Score

The Upper Iowa women's soccer team hosted the third place Huskies of St. Cloud State in the final home conference match of the 2009 season on Sunday afternoon in Fayette. A year ago in St. Cloud, the two teams locked up in a double overtime tie and this season proved to be no different. Both SCSU and UIU had to endure very windy conditions all afternoon and after 110 minutes, the match remained deadlocked at 0-0. With the tie, the Peacocks are now 7-7-3 overall and 3-4-2 in the NSIC, while the Huskies are now 7-4-4 overall and 6-2-2 in conference matches.

For the four Peacock seniors, the match was the final conference home match of their careers. Amy Campbell, Cara Mauldin, Christine Dwyer, and Melissa Heitzman were all recognized after the game.

St. Cloud played with the wind at their backs in the first half, but only challenged the Peacock defense a handful of times. After halftime, the Peacocks tried to take advantage of the wind and racked up a number of shots, but UIU was unable to put a shot across the goal line.

The Peacocks took one more shot than the Huskies, 17-16, and held a 12-8 advantage in shots on goal. The Huskies doubled up their hosts on corner kick opportunities, 10-5, but neither team could get a shot past the goal keepers. Heitzman, the UIU goalie, made 8 saves while posting her seventh shutout of the season.

The Peacocks have four Northern Sun Conference matches left as they currently sit in ninth place in the NSIC. Upper Iowa trails eighth place and the final spot in the NSIC Championships by four points.

Upper Iowa is on the road tomorrow with a non-conference match at Northwestern College. The Peacocks' will play their final home match of the season on Wednesday afternoon against Clarke College.
