Oct. 16, 2009

Box Score

Riding a hot streak of 3-1-1 in the last five matches, the Upper Iowa Women's Soccer team was back on the field Friday afternoon as they entertained the Golden Bears of Concordia-St. Paul to open the final weekend of home Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference matches for the Peacocks.

After taking a 1-0 lead into the halftime break, UIU allowed a late second half goal to the Golden Bears, and then allowed another in the first overtime session to drop the game, 2-1.

Sophomore Shaina Marnell blasted a rebound past the Golden Bear goalkeeper in the 19th minute to give UIU a 1-0 lead into the halftime break. The goal was unassisted.

UIU's lead would vanish in the 75th minute when Concordia-St Paul took advantage of a foul near the penalty area as they would put the ensuing free kick into the top left corner of the goal to even the score, 1-1.

The squads were forced into an overtime situation after neither team could mount any offensive charge in the final 15 minutes of action. Then, just six minutes into the first overtime period, the Golden Bears struck again and won the contest, 2-1.

Upper Iowa outshot Concordia-St. Paul 12-11 for the match which included a 9-7 clip in shots on goal. However, the Golden Bears earned four more corner kicks and the lone shot in overtime.

The Peacocks (7-7-1; 3-4-1 NSIC) will close out the home portion of the conference season on Sunday when the Huskies of St. Cloud State University visit Pattison Field in Fayette for a 1 p.m. clash.
