The Peacock women's basketball team welcomed the Marauders of the University of Mary to Dorman Gym of Friday night as the teams restarted the Northern Sun Conference season. The visitors built an eleven point lead by halftime using their defense to hold the home team to just 28 percent shooting including 2 of 12 from behind the three-point line.Upper Iowa's shooting improved in the second half, but the Peacocks could not make u the deficit as they fell 62-48. With the loss, UIU falls to 5-7 on the season and 1-4 in NSIC play. U-Mary improves to 8-4 on the year and 3-2 in conference games.
For the game, Upper Iowa shot 31 percent from the floor and 29 percent from three. U-Mary hit 43 percent of their attempts from the field and also hit 29 percent of their long balls. The Marauders out-scored the Peacocks 40-10 in the paint led by Liz Sipma's 17 points.
The Peacocks were led by Andrea Downs, who netted 15 points. Lana Otting picked up six assists in the game. Otting and Lyndsay Westgaard led the rebounding effort with five each.
Upper Iowa will return to the floor tomorrow night as they look to pick up their second NSIC victory. The Peacocks will host the Wolves of Northern State at 6 p.m.
