The Wayne State College women's basketball team earned an 89-28 win over Upper Iowa on Saturday evening in Wayne. With the win, Wayne State improved to 9-7 overall and 6-3 in the NSIC. Upper Iowa fell to 5-12 overall and 1-9 in the NSIC with the loss.
Upper Iowa started the game with five total players. However, UIU was left with only three players after Lyndsay Westgaard fouled out and Lene Lox suffered an injury. UIU played the final 11:34 with only three players. The Rice Auditorium crowd gave Upper Iowa a standing ovation at the end of the game.
Wayne State hit 38 of 81 shots on the evening for 46.9 percent. The 'Cats went 13-39 from behind the three point line in the win. Upper Iowa hit just 11 of 49 shots in the game for 22.4 percent. The Peacocks went 1-11 from behind the three point line and went 5-9 from the free throw line. Wayne State held a commanding 55-28 rebounding advantage. Upper Iowa had 21 turnovers in the game compared to just nine for the Wildcats.
JulieAnn Wagner scored a career-high 17 points to lead a balanced WSC scoring attack. Laquisha Cook and Clare Duwelius added 13 points apiece. Kati Jo Christensen had 11 points and Jodie Boss added 10 for the 'Cats. Mara Hjelle pulled down a career-high 15 rebounds for the Wildcats in the win.
Paige DeVine had 13 points to lead Upper Iowa.
