The Upper Iowa women's soccer team was back on the field this afternoon facing perennial power Winona State. The Warriors came into the match as the #5 team in the country according to the latest NSCAA/Adidas Top 25 and the #1 team in the region. Both teams began the game with identical 2-0 records in Northern Sun play. Upper Iowa came out strong in the first half keeping most of the team on defense and only taking a few runs into the offensive half. The Peacocks became a bit bolder in the second half with the wind at their backs. The team began to play balls into Amy Campbell, Jamie Krusie and Emily Gielau looking for opportunities. Neither team found the back of the net in regulation, but Winona State ended the game in the 5th minute of overtime as Lauren Sturdivant put home a rebound from just 3 yards out to lift the Warriors to the victory. With the hard fought loss, Upper Iowa's record dropped to 4-4-1 overall and 2-1 in the NSIC, while Winona State improved to 7-1 overall and 3-0 in the NSIC.
In the game, the Warriors outshot the defensive minded Peacocks 19-6 including a 12-4 advantage in shots on goal. Amanda Diehmm made four saves to pick up the shutout win, while Melissa Heitzman, the Peacock keeper, was strong in goal turning away 11 shots on goal with saves.
Upper Iowa will return to Pattison Field in Fayette for a non-conference match up with the Flyers of Lewis University. The match will begin at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 1. The men's team will follow with a match against Lewis at 3 p.m.
