Signorin Seizes History as Peacocks Shutout Warriors at Home

Sept. 23, 2008

Box Score

The Peacock men's soccer team welcomed the Warriors of Waldorf College for a match on Monday afternoon on Pattison Field in Fayette. Upper Iowa came out strong in the opening minutes scoring the eventual game winning goal in just the third minute of action. The Peacocks added five more through the final horn to take the victory 6-0 and even their record to 4-4-1. The four wins already this season tie last year's season total for victories.

Craig Signorin put his name in the UIU men's soccer record books during the game as well. The senior assisted on the Peacocks' first goal and then scored the second goal giving him sole possession of two records. Signorin now has the most goals scored in a career (24) and the most points earned in a career (58). The previous records were both held by Joey Gay (1997-2000) who scored 23 goals and earned 57 points in his four year career. Signorin's six goals this season have hunting down another record... goals in a season. The current record for goals in a season is eight by Kyle Touchette in 2004 and Joey Gay in 1997.

Steve Kluck got the scoring started in the third minute. Kluck's goal zipped past the goalie from 14 yards out and found the right side of the net. Signorin and Jason Olsgard picked up assists on the score. Signorin's goal, a header from a corner kick off the foot of Derek Oelmann, bounced past the goal line in the eighth minute. Upper Iowa scored their final goal of the first half in the 24th minute. Alex Hess went up into the air and finished an excellent cross from Brent Paeth. The Peacocks used a dominating 21-0 advantage in shots to build their 3-0 lead at the break.

The second half was more of the same for Upper Iowa. The home team put their fourth goal on the board in the 54th minute. Oelmann scored from 10 yards out after Tony Varnava and Justin Marchant set up the goal with good passes. The Peacocks continued to hammer away at the Warrior keeper, but didn't break through again until the final six five minutes. In the 85th minute, Shane Elbert put the ball into the back of the net on an unassisted breakaway. Just a minute and a half later, Ravi Potes Mangra got into the scoring column for the first time in his career when he and Elbert worked a give-and-go for the final goal.

For the game, Upper Iowa racked up a 40-2 advantage in shots and a 16-0 advantage in corner kicks. Andy Youde played the first half in the UIU net and was not tested once. Joey Gates saw his first action of the season and made two saves in his forty-five minutes of action.

Upper Iowa gets back on the road this Wednesday down in Mount Pleasant, Iowa where they will face the Tigers of Iowa Wesleyan College. The match is set to begin at 4 p.m.
