The Upper Iowa men's soccer team traveled to St. Louis, Missouri on Tuesday to play under the lights. The Peacocks took on the Tritons of the University of Missouri-St. Louis, who came into the match with a perfect 3-0 record. Upper Iowa spoiled the home opener for the host Tritons as they were able to match their hosts goal for goal to earn a draw in the match. The match ended in a 2-2 tie after two overtimes.
UMSL put the first notch on the scoreboard in the 22nd minute on a penalty kick by Blair Spencer. UIU received a penalty kick of their own in the 30th minute. Senior Craig Signorin took the kick and put it past the Triton keeper to tie the score at 1-1.
Upper Iowa was the first to score in the second half just two minutes into the action. Derek Oelmann was able to finish in the box as he gathered in a rebound and hammered it past the goalie. Missouri-St. Louis tied the game in the 50th minute when Jared Smith kicked the ball to the net on a free kick.
The Peacocks held a 15-9 advantage in shots, including a 9-6 edge in shots on goal. Peacock keeper, Andy Youde, played all 110 minutes and made four saves.
The Tritons (3-0-1) were ranked fifth in the Midwest region of the latest NSCAA/Adidas Regional Rankings coming into the contest with the Peacocks after defeating their first three opponents, all of which were Division II institutions. Upper Iowa (2-3-1) entered the match as the #7 team in the Central region of the same NSCAA/Adidas Regional Rankings.
Upper Iowa will host the Raiders of Northwestern College on Saturday, Sept. 13, at Pattison Field in Fayette. The game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. following the women's game against Northwestern.
