Upper Iowa Season Opener Ends in Tie after Two Overtimes

Aug. 29, 2008

Final Stats

The Upper Iowa women's soccer team traveled to Colorado for their season opener on the heels of a successful preseason that saw the Peacocks claim two exhibition wins including one over Division I-Northern Iowa. The Peacocks took the field against the Orediggers of the Colorado School of Mines on Thursday evening. The contest was the first of the year for both teams and after regulation and two overtime periods, a total of 110 minutes of action, the score was knotted at 2-2, and the game ended in a tie.

The School of Mines opened the scoring with a goal in the 22nd minute. The goal came on a cross from deep in the corner which found the foot of a runner who placed it into the side netting of the goal.

Upper Iowa would tie the game at 1-1, but the goal did not come until there was just 8:45 to play in the contest. Amy Campbell was able to find the back of the net for the Peacocks. Campbell took a corner kick from Cara Mauldin and deposited into the Oredigger net.

Just 47 seconds later, Mines stole back the momentum as an Oredigger player chipped the ball over the Peacock keeper for an unassisted goal to give the home team their one goal lead back, 2-1.

The Peacocks, not to be outdone, went on the immediate offensive and received a direct kick within range of the Mines goal. Jennifer Lee took the kick and tied the game as the ball cruised through the frame. The Peacocks had a pair of chances in the final minutes of regulation but could not convert a goal. The overtime periods were filled with action and a lot of chances on both sides for the win, but the teams ended the game in a 2-2 tie.

Mines held a 25-11 advantage in shots, but only a 12-7 advantage in shots on goal. Melissa Heitzman made 10 saves in goal for the Peacocks.

Upper Iowa (0-0-1) will stay on the road in Colorado and travel to Colorado Christian for a match on Saturday, Aug. 30, at 1:00 p.m. The Peacocks will play in their home opener next Wednesday, Sept. 3, at 3 p.m. on Pattison Field in Fayette. UIU will host Mt. Mercy in the home opener.
