UIU - MWSU Box Score || UIU - UND Box Score
The Upper Iowa softball team played two games on Sunday in the weather-shortened tournament hosted by Minnesota State in Mankato, Minnesota. Snow on the field caused the five game tournament to be reduced to just two. The Peacocks fell in both games on Sunday; 3-1 to Missouri Western and 10-4 to North Dakota.
All the runs in game one were scored in the first three innings. Missouri Western scored a run in the bottom of the first only to see Upper Iowa tie it up in the top of the second. With one out, Meredith Ang walked and advanced to second on a single by Erin Bennek. When Amanda Gargantiel was hit by a pitch, UIU had the bases loaded with one out. Jackie Greco stepped in and got an rbi with a ground out to the shortstop. The Peacock threat ended on a flyout. Missouri Western put a pair of runs on the board in the bottom of the third to snap the 1-1 tie on a pair of singles and a double.
Stephany Daubenspeck went 2-3 in the game, while starter Christy Loan threw 6 innings allowing three runs, two earned, on three hits. Loan struck out four batters on the day.
In game two, the Peacocks fell behind 3-0 after just one half inning. North Dakota scored three runs on two hits including a three-run homerun. Upper Iowa got one back in the bottom of the inning. Kami Appelt singled to left with one out and advanced to second on a Nikki Davis walk. Bennek singled to centerfield and drove in Daubenspeck for UIU's first run. The Fighting Sioux added a pair of runs in the third and fifth innings to take a 7-1 lead. During those two innings, UND added three homeruns to their tally.
The Peacocks scratched out runs in the bottom of the fifth and seventh innings but could not overcome the deficit. UIU got the run in the fifth on a Davis solo shot over the left field wall. The final two runs came on Davis' second homerun of the day. For the game, Davis went 2-2 with 3 rbi's and 2 runs scored. Bennek was 2-3 with an rbi and Appelt was 1-3 with two runs scored.
The Peacocks ended the day with a 12-27 record overall with a home double header against Minnesota State to close out the regular season on Tuesday, Apr. 29.
