Peacocks Complete Series Sweep of Warriors with Sunday's Wins

April 27, 2008

Game One Box Score || Game Two Box Score

The Peacocks completed a series sweep of the Warriors of Winona State. After winning two games on Saturday, Upper Iowa picked up two more victories on Sunday afternoon in Fayette. UIU took game one 10-2 and scored three runs in the sixth to break a 2-2 tie and win the game 5-3.

With the pair of wins, the Peacocks improve to 25-23 on the season and 21-7 in Northern Sun play. Upper Iowa now has more NSIC victories than any other team in the league. They trail first-place Wayne State by just two games as the Wildcats (20-4) split with Concordia-St. Paul today in the Metrodome.

Greg Sieck earned the complete game victory in game one, his third straight complete game win. Sieck threw seven innings scattering six hits and allowing two runs, one of which was earned, to the Warriors. The southpaw walked two while striking out four Winona State batters to improve his record to 4-1 and lower his team-low ERA to 1.66 on the season.

Lucas Wilsing started game two and picked up a no decision as he went four innings allowing just one unearned run on just two hits. Wilsing picked up four strikeouts in his outing. Chris Wlezien started the fifth inning in relief of Wilsing and gave up a run in the fifth that tied the game at 2-2, but regained his focus and pitched well over the final innings to earn his third win of the season. Wlezien allowed two runs, one of which was earned, while giving up two hits over his three innings of work. Wlezien ended the Warrior rally in the seventh with two men on with a strikeout, his second of the game.

Nick Fjelland led the Peacocks at the plate dominating the Warrior pitchers all weekend. Fjelland rapped out four hits in six at bats including two doubles and a homerun in game two that broke the 2-2 tie. The Peacock third basemen picked 5 rbi's on the day. Fjelland's two doubles give him sole possession of the UIU baseball program's record for doubles in a season with 23. The previous record was held by Gary Mu'min (21 in 1995).

T.J. Johnson and Kreston Albright each tallied three hits on the day. Albright scored three runs in game one and had two doubles, while Johnson's hits included two singles and solo homer to left. Johnson scored two runs and drove two Peacock runs. Brock Spangenberg hit 2-5 on the day including a single and double. The first basemen scored one run and drove in one.

Ronnie Kurihara capped off the Peacock scoring in game one with a grand slam in the fifth inning. The Peacock catcher had two hits on the day while picking the four rbi's. Travis Mather had two hits including a double while picking two rbi's and scoring one run.

Upper Iowa will close their home schedule this Wednesday afternoon, Apr. 30, when they host the Quincy University baseball team at 3 p.m. The Peacock seniors will be honored between games of the double header.
