The Upper Iowa women's tennis team defeated the Warriors of Winona State, 5-4, in a makeup of their meet from earlier in the season. Last season the Warriors won the conference regular season with an undefeated record including a tight 5-4 victory over the Peacocks. The meet came down to the match last year and it seemed like deja vu today when the meet came down to the decision at #5 singles.
Upper Iowa won two of the three doubles matches including a dominating performance at #3 doubles. Jennifer Bradfield and Kasey Huisman lost at #1 by an 8-4 count, Mallery Cox and Erin Kelley won their match at #2 by a close 9-7 margin, while Kelsey Montgomery and Betsy Limburg won at #3 by the score 8-1.
With a 2-1 lead, the Peacocks needed to split the singles matches to take the team victory. Huisman won her match 6-4, 6-1 at #2, Montgomery won her match 6-2, 6-3 at #4, and Kelley clinched the win for UIU with a tiebreaker win; 1-6, 6-4, 10-3. Bradfield lost at #1 6-1, 6-3, Cox lost at #3 7-5, 3-6, 7-10, and Nicole Henry fell at #6 by a 6-1, 6-2 count.
The victory for the Peacocks improves their spring record to 5-5 overall and 2-0 in the NSIC. The victory also ties the Peacocks with the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State for 1st place in the conference. Upper Iowa will travel to Western Illinois next weekend to face three Division I schools before returning to their conference schedule and pursuit of a NSIC title.
