Upper Iowa - South Dakota Results
The Upper Iowa women's tennis team fell short in their contests on Friday night and Saturday morning this past weekend. Upper Iowa lost 9-0 to the St. Cloud State University Huskies, a future Northern Sun Conference opponent, on Friday night. The team then lost a close Saturday morning match, 5-4, to the University of South Dakota Coyotes. Both matches took place at St. Cloud State.
Against the Huskies, Upper Iowa did not pick up a win in any of the three doubles matches. Jennifer Bradfield and Erin Kelley lost 8-2; Kelsey Montgomery and Mallery Cox lost 8-3; and Nicole Henry and Betsy Limburg lost 8-3.
The Peacocks trailed 0-3 heading into the singles competition, but could not mount a comeback. St. Could State won all six of the singles matches. Upper Iowa's Bradfield started the singles competition strong as she won the lone set of the day, but lost a close match 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. Montgomery also played a tough match barely losing each set 6-4, 6-4. Cox continued the play with a 6-0, 6-1 loss. Faith Atherton fell in her match up losing 6-2, 6-1. Kelley dropped the Peacocks next match 6-2, 6-3, while Limburg lost in two sets 6-1, 6-3.
Against the Coyotes, Upper Iowa won two of the three doubles matches; the two wins improved on last year's contest with USD, which UIU lost 8-1. Bradfield and Kelley played very well in an 8-4 performance; duplicating the first doubles match, Montgomery and Cox won 8-4; the Peacocks couldn't complete the doubles sweep as Limburg and Henry lost 8-5. The Peacocks took their 2-1 lead into the singles competition, but failed to hold the lead.
South Dakota won 4 of the 6 singles matches. The Bradfield dropped the first match 6-3, 6-1. Montgomery kept the Peacocks on top winning her match in a 6-3, 6-0 win. Cox dominated the next match of singles play with impressive 6-1, 6-1 wins. South Dakota won the next three matches against Upper Iowa's #4, #5, and #6 players to edge the Peacocks 5-4. Atherton lost 7-6(7-3), 6-1, while Kelley played a tough first set losing 6-4, but lost in the second 6-1. Betsy Limburg played a close match but lost in two sets 6-3, 6-4.
The Peacocks will take the court again on the 15th of February in Waterloo at 4 p.m. against the Minnesota State Mavericks and again the following morning, the 16th, at 10 a.m. in Waterloo against a fellow NSIC team, Winona State Warriors.
