Final Stats
The Peacock women's basketball team played against the Huskies of St. Cloud State on Saturday night in Dorman Gym. SCSU came into the game with a perfect 6-0 record, while UIU came in at 3-3.
The Huskies built a 36-29 lead at halftime by hitting on six more field goals. The Peacocks were able to stay close to the visitors thanks to good shooting from behind the arc (4-7). Freshman Lyndsay Westgaard led the Peacocks in the first half with 8 points and 4 rebounds.
In the second half, the Huskies opened their lead up and hit their biggest margin of the night with 9:21 to play, 58-41. Upper Iowa began to turn up the pace of their offense and switched to a zone on defense. The changes began to pay off as the home team cut the margin to eleven points, 58-47, with just over eight minutes to play thanks to back-to-back threes from Lana Otting and Andrea Downs. The two teams closed out the final eight minutes of the game with the same amount of points, 20-20, as St. Cloud State moved to 2-0 in the NSIC. With the loss, UIU drops to 3-4 on the year and 0-2 in conference play.
The Peacocks were led by Westgaard's 18 points and 8 rebounds. Three other UIU players scored in double figures; Downs and Otting each scored 12, while Melissa Fitz netted 11. Downs dished out 5 assists on the night. Upper Iowa's Achilles heel in the game came in the form of turnovers (22).
Upper Iowa will return to the court next weekend, Dec. 12 and 13. The Peacocks will face the Bulldogs of Minnesota Duluth on Friday night and the Beavers of Bemidji State on Saturday night.
