Upper Iowa Defeats Luther in Exhibition Game

The Upper Iowa women's basketball team opened their competitive season with an exhibition game at home against Luther College. The Peacocks used a 27 to 19 advantage in rebounds including an 8 to 3 advantage in offensive boards to build a three-point lead at halftime, 30-27.

The Peacocks led by as many as 15 points, 55-40, midway through the second half. The home team was able to maintain their lead over the final ten minutes thanks to some long range shooting. UIU won the exhibition game 73-65 over Luther. The Peacocks played the game with just six players due to several injuries.

UIU shot 43% from the field for the game including 57% in the second half while Luther only managed to make 38% of their shots. The Peacocks hit 7 of their 17 three-pointers, while Luther hit 5 of 15 from beyond the arc. Upper Iowa finished the game +9 in rebounding 47 to 38.

The home team was led by Britney Iredale, who registered a double-double with 20 points and 17 rebounds; the senior also added 5 blocked shots and 3 steals. Newcomers Lana Otting and Lene Lox each hit for 15 points, while freshman Melissa Fitz scored 14. Andrea Downs only scored 5 points, but the junior paced the Peacock offense with 11 assists. Chelsea Arndt was the sixth Peacock player; the sophomore scored 4 points and pulled down 5 rebounds.

Upper Iowa will play one more exhibition game before opening their season at home, Nov. 15, against Rockhurst University. The Peacocks will play against the Hawkeyes of the University of Iowa in Carver-Hawkeye Arena at 3:30 p.m. this coming Sunday, Nov. 9.
