Peacocks Defeat Former Iowa Conference Foe with Dominant Second Half

Nov. 25, 2008

Final Stats

The Peacock women's basketball team picked up their second win of the season by defeating a former Iowa Conference foe, 87-65. The game was close through the first twenty minutes as Upper Iowa led 32-30 when the teams hit the halftime break. The home team dominated the second half, much like they did last year when the teams met in Pella. UIU outscored Central 55-35 in the second stanza to take the victory by a 22-point margin. With the win, the Peacocks improve to 2-1 overall, while Central falls to 1-3 on the season.

The teams opened the game slowly as both teams committed multiple turnovers that clogged up the offensive flow. Upper Iowa seemed to be the first team to finally break through as they inched out to a nine-point lead, 22-13, with 7:20 to play in the first half. The Peacocks maintained their lead and were ahead 32-24 with 3:45 on the clock after a Lene Lox three pointer. However, the Dutch stormed back finishing the half on a 6-0 run thanks to their defense forcing three turnovers and poor shooting from the Peacocks.

Lox led the Peacocks in the half with 13 points and 3 rebounds. UIU held an 18-8 advantage in points in the paint and a 15-8 advantage in points off turnovers, but Central hung tough thanks to a 6-0 advantage in second chance points.

The Peacocks opened the second half dialed in on offense outscoring the Dutch 23-11 over the first seven minutes of the half to push their lead from two points to fourteen. Britney Iredale scored eight points in the opening minutes of half number two. Upper Iowa continued to push on the offensive end and limit Central to just one shot to extend their lead and pick up the comfortable victory.

The Peacocks finished the night owning the paint thanks to a 44-22 disparity in point in the paint. UIU shot 60.6% from the field and 100% (12-12) at the free throw line in the second half.

Upper Iowa was led by Andrea Downs, who scored 19 points pulled down 5 boards, handed out 7 assists and nabbed 4 steals. Lox scored 23, while three other Peacocks scored in double figures; Melissa Fitz (12), Lyndsay Westgaard (11), and Iredale (10). Westgaard pulled down 9 rebounds and Iredale hauled in 8. Lana Otting scored 9 points and also dished out 7 assists.

The Peacocks will now prepare for two games in the NSIC Holiday Hoops Fest. UIU will face the Beavers of Bemidji State on Saturday at 1 p.m. and the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State on Sunday at 1 p.m. Both games will be played in Sioux Falls, S.D at the Elmen Center on the campus of Augustana College. The games will not count toward the season's NSIC standings.
