Final Stats
The peacocks took the tip and were off and running, led by Britney Iredale. The home team went on a 13-4 run which forced Waldorf's coach to call timeout: six minutes later UIU's lead had been cut to two, 17-15. Waldorf battled back thanks to second chance points and offensive rebounds. The Warriors would eventually tie the game, 26-26 but that didn't last long as the Peacocks turned on the heat defensively and finished the first half on a 18-6 run.
Waldorf crept back into the game over the first six and a half minutes, cutting the Peacocks lead down to three, 54-51. Upper Iowa led 56-53 with 12:19 left to play when Head Coach Mike Brown turned up the intensity on defense. The Peacocks offense enjoyed a 12-0 run thanks to great ball pressure and timely rebounding by Iredale, who grabbed four boards during the run. Five UIU players scored during the run. The Peacocks maintained their double digit lead over the final seven minutes of the game to take the victory 83-68.
Upper Iowa shot 55% from the field while holding Waldorf to 38% shooting. However, WC out rebounded UIU 40-39 including a 15-8 advantage in offensive rebounds. Both teams forced the ball into the paint with the home team claiming a slight advantage in points in the paint, 44-36.
The Peacocks were led by Iredale's second double-double of the season as she tallied 31 points and 12 boards. The senior also added 3 assists, 3 blocks and 5 steals. Three other Peacocks scored in double figures, Lene Lox netted 16 points and Melissa Fitz and Lyndsay Westgaard each chipped in 10 points. Upper Iowa recorded 25 assists; Andrea Downs led the way with 9 while Lana Otting handed out 5. Three players finished with 5 boards; Westgaard, Lox, and Fitz.
Waldorf was led by four scorers in double figures. Kate Milbrandt led the way with 16, Sarah Swanson finished with 14, and Aubrey Draves and Megan Forster each netted 11. Rachel Hannam pulled down 8 rebounds for the Warriors.
Upper Iowa will play their third straight home game next Tuesday night, Nov. 25. The Peacocks will host the Dutch of Central College in a rematch of former Iowa Conference foes. The tip is scheduled for 7:00 in Dorman Gym.
