The Peacock men's soccer team took Pattison Field today against the only other men's team in the Northern Sun Conference. Upper Iowa and U-Mary are the only two schools in the fourteen-member conference that sponsor men's soccer.
UIU controlled the ball and pace of play in the first half holding a 14-0 advantage in shots. The Peacocks were unable to put a goal on the board in the first 45 minutes; their two best opportunities came on a pair of Tony Varnava headers.
The Peacocks continued to push the pace and get shots in the direction of the Marauder net. With just under ten minutes to play, the Peacocks had a shot that hit under the crossbar and land on or near the goal line, but the officials felt the ball never crossed over the line. It seemed that Upper Iowa might not be able to get the game winner, but in the 87th minute Upper Iowa made their claim at a winning season. Craig Signorin drove a shot past the U-Mary keeper thanks to a pair of assists from Derek Oelmann and Steve Kluck.
With the 1-0 victory, the Peacocks improved to 9-7-1 overall and guaranteed their first winning season in the program's history. Upper Iowa will take Pattison Field one more time this season on Sunday afternoon. Seniors Craig Signorin, Jacob Rasbeck, and Tyler Watkins will be honored before the men's game on Sunday. The Peacocks host Briar Cliff University for their final match.
