The Upper Iowa women's soccer team played host to the Marauders of the University of Mary on Friday afternoon in Fayette. The Northern Sun match up featured the #3 and #7 teams in the NSIC. The Peacocks used an early goal on a restart and a second goal early in half number two to claim a 2-0 lead with thirty-seven minutes to play. Upper Iowa held on over the final third of the match to improve their record to 9-8-2 overall and 6-5-1 in the NSIC. U-Mary dropped to 10-9-0 overall and 9-3-0 in conference action.
Upper Iowa got their first shot of the game in the 27th minute. Their first shot resulted in the first goal of the game. Senior Jennifer Lee lined up a rocket from 30 yards on a free kick. The shot soared over the Marauder keeper for a UIU 1-0 lead.
The Peacocks added an insurance goal in the 54th minute. Lee sent a long pass that Allison Clark was able to run under the ball and take it toward goal. The freshman slid a shot past the goal line for a 2-0 lead for the home team.
Melissa Heitzman made 6 saves in goal to preserve the shutout victory.
With the victory, Upper Iowa has clinched a spot in the NSIC Tournament. The Peacocks have one game remaining on their regular season schedule against Northern State on Sunday afternoon. The Wolves and Peacocks will be playing for the #6 seed in the NSIC tournament when they meet on Sunday.
