The Upper Iowa volleyball team welcomed the Mustangs of Mount Mercy College to Dorman Gym on Tuesday night. The Peacocks took the floor for the home match with a look of determination and focus in their eyes. With their leader, Darcy Hageman, on the sidelines watching due to injury, the team came together in one of their best performances of the season.
The Peacocks dominated the first two games winning 30-15 and 30-11. The Peacocks hit .231 in game one and were on unstoppable in game two as they hit .500. After the short break, Upper Iowa and Mount Mercy played an even game three until the Peacocks took control late in the game. The Mustangs attempted a rally as the home team sat on 29 points for five serves until finally getting a kill from Kim Humpal to end the game and match.
"This was something that we had to have. Tonight the ladies came out and played as the better team. Many of the ladies stepped up to fill the absence of Darcy. It was great to see Kim (Humpal) get back on track and be very effective, as well as Keely (Jones). She is playing a position that she has not played since high school and she is doing well," said Coach Dave Jackson. Jackson continued, "Beth (Deutmeyer) and Lydia (Lofte) were also strong for us tonight. Every member of this team needs to keep raising the level of their play for us to continue finding success as we move through the Northern Sun conference season."
Keri Vance and Tatiana Jackson set the Peacocks' offense for the night with 28 and 13 assists, respectively. Beth Deutmeyer led the attack with 12 kills (.409), while Humpal tallied 11 kills (.579) and Jones drove home 9 kills (.368). Lofte led the team on defense with 11 digs, while Jones (3 blocks) and Deutmeyer (2 blocks) were active at the net.
The Peacocks (4-11, 0-5 NSIC) will take to the road to face #4 Southwest Minnesota State on Friday, Sept. 28, and then roll on to Wayne State in Nebraska on Saturday, Sept. 29. Southwest Minnesota State (5-0 NSIC) is currently leading the conference, while Wayne State (3-3 NSIC) is in fifth.
