The Peacock women's soccer program completed their final non-conference weekend with a split. Upper Iowa hosted Southwest Minnesota State and Wayne State. The games were the last two non-conference games between NSIC teams. Upper Iowa went 2-2 in their non-conference games with NSIC teams defeating Concordia-St. Paul and Wayne State.
On Saturday, the Peacocks got on the board first thanks to a strike off the foot of Lauren Smith from 10 yards out. Ashleigh Lengel and Jennifer Burnett assisted on the goal in the 22nd minute. The Mustangs hit the equalizer five minutes later off the head of Ellen Diekemper and took the lead in the 41st minute as Kate Voigt put a rebound past the Peacock keeper. The teams headed to the locker rooms with Upper Iowa trailing 2-1 despite a 12-9 advantage in shots for the home team.
Upper Iowa's deficit grew to two goals as Southwest Minnesota State added an insurance goal in the 58th minute. Diekemper put the shot home for her second goal of the match. Upper Iowa continued to put pressure on the Mustang defense firing 11 shots in the second half, but Kayla Borstad held her ground in goal and maintained the Mustang lead to the final horn.
On Sunday, Upper Iowa and Wayne State got together for a physical battle. The Peacocks scored a goal in the 29th minute to take a 1-0 lead. UIU's Amy Campbell finished a breakaway from 15 yards out. Ashleigh Lengel hit a great ball out of the defensive half that Campbell took with her speed at the goalie. The Wildcats offense never really got started in the match as the Peacocks kept the pressure on. Campbell put number two on the board in the 89th minute with another breakaway set up by Jennifer Lee. Campbell's two goals were her third and fourth scores of the season. Melissa Heitzman made one save in goal to pick up the shutout victory.
After the split the Peacocks are now 6-5-0 overall and have only NSIC matches remaining. Upper Iowa will host Northern State, Sept. 29 at 1:00, and the University of Mary, Sept. 30 at 1:00, this weekend in their first two conference matches of the season.
