Upper Iowa Falls at Winona State in Northern Sun Match Up

The Peacock women's basketball team headed to Winona, Minnesota for the latest Northern Sun Conference match up. Upper Iowa took the floor versus the Warriors of Winona State University. Both teams entered the contest at 0-2 in the NSIC after having both lost close games to Northern State and the University of Mary last weekend. The home team took a 37-19 lead into the locker room at halftime, and held off the Peacocks in the second half for a 74-54 victory. The loss dropped Upper Iowa's record to 4-9 overall and 0-3 in the NSIC.

Winona State opened the game by taking a 15-2 lead over the first eight minutes of the game. The Peacocks made just one field goal in twelve attempts while committing three turnovers in the first eight minutes. Upper Iowa began to find their offensive stride as the half progressed, but the road team still headed to the locker room down by eighteen points, 37-19. Upper Iowa took advantage of their free throw opportunities in the first half hitting 7 of 9, but the Peacocks did not make their single attempt from three and netted just six field goals in twenty-seven attempts. UIU also tallied one assist and committed eight turnovers.

Upper Iowa was able to cut the deficit to sixteen on three occasions, but Winona State kept the pressure on and claimed their largest lead of the game with 4:40 to play, 68-41. The Peacocks outscored the Warriors 13-6 over the final few minutes of the game, but took the loss 74-54. UIU shot much better in the second half; 63% (17-27) from the field. The road team handed out eleven assists in the half, but still committed nine turnovers.

Christa Hammel led the Peacocks in scoring with 18 points, while Chelsea Petersen scored 17 points with all but one coming in the second half. Hammel also led the team in rebounds with 8; Kashinda Banks pulled down 6 boards. Andrea Downs dished out 4 assists and Katie Rodewald handed out 3 assists.

Upper Iowa will head down to Kansas City, Missouri to face Rockhurst University at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 13, in a non-conference game.
