#5 Winona State Defeats Upper Iowa after First Half Battle

Upper Iowa's men's basketball team traveled to Winona, Minnesota for a match up with Northern Sun Conference favorite Winona State. The Warriors are ranked #5 in the latest NABC Coaches Poll. Upper Iowa entered the game in search of their first win of the season, while Winona State took the floor with a 10-1 record and a 32-game win streak in NSIC games. The Peacocks took a 29-20 lead with 8:03 to play in the first half, but the Warriors rallied to take a seven point lead into halftime, 43-36. A 19-2 run that spanned the first seven minutes of the second half propelled Winona State to the victory, 84-58.

Upper Iowa was able to build the nine-point lead, 29-20, in the first half via their hot shooting as the Peacocks hit 10 of their first 16 field goal attempts. UIU hit three trifectas including two from A.J. Adkins and one from Jude Roybal. The home team got their offense clicking and rallied to tie the score at 34-34 with 2:56 to play in the half. The Warriors out scored the Peacocks 9-2 over the final three minutes to take a lead into the locker room.

Upper Iowa did not shoot well in the second half only hitting 7 shots in 23 attempts (30.4%) and 3 of 9 from behind the arc. The Peacocks only recorded 3 of their 14 assists and committed 12 of their 20 turnovers in the second twenty minutes. Winona State slowly extended their lead to the final horn as Upper Iowa was defeated 84-58.

Adkins led Upper Iowa in scoring with 18 points including three three-pointers and 7 for 8 shooting at the charity stripe. Roybal also netted double figures for the Peacocks with 15 points on 6-9 shooting; the point guard was 3-3 from the arc. Chris Sullivan led the team in rebounding with 7 (4 offensive), while Matt Lesan and Alex Kramer each pulled down 4 boards. Five Peacocks each tallied two assists in the game.

Upper Iowa will journey north to Grand Forks, North Dakota to battle the University of North Dakota at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 11, in a non-conference game.
