Peacocks Defeat Warriors at Home

The Upper Iowa women's basketball team played host to Waldorf College, who had a 6-2 record going into Monday night. The Peacocks won 2 out of 3 on their holiday road trip with wins over Central and Chadron State. Upper Iowa won easily after a tough first half, 66-47, for their 4th win of the season.

The first half was a defensive struggle. Andrea Downs led Upper Iowa with 7 points in the first twenty minutes. Both sides struggled from the field as the Peacocks shot 30% (11-36) and the Warriors shot 20% (6-30). Megan Forster led Waldorf with 8 points, but committed all of the Warriors 7 turnovers. The Peacocks held a slim lead at the break, 24-17.

Upper Iowa opened the second half well and extended their lead to 35-21 at the 15:17 mark. The Peacocks shooting percentage improved to 43% in the second half, while Waldorf continued to struggle. Upper Iowa showed improved execution and defense, which contributed to a 20-point lead, 65-45, with two minutes remaining. Chelsea Petersen led the Peacocks with 10 points in the second half. Paige DeVine chipped in 9 second half points to help the Peacocks pull away to a 66-47 victory.

Overall, the Peacocks played well and continue show improvement each time they step onto the floor. Petersen notched a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards. DeVine netted 11 points, while Britney Iredale and Kim Thompson each added 8 points. Iredale also pulled down 6 rebounds. Andrea Downs handed out 8 assists and scored 7 points. In total 10 Peacocks scored while 14 saw action on the floor. A true sign of the Peacocks' strong defense was the fact that the Warriors only managed 2 offensive rebounds.

The Peacocks will be back in action this weekend, Nov. 30 and Dec. 1, as they open the Northern Sun Conference schedule. Upper Iowa will travel to Aberdeen, South Dakota on Friday to face the Wolves of Northern State and then move on to Bismarck, North Dakota on Saturday to match up with the Marauders of the University of Mary. Both games can be seen on NorthernSun.tv and will tip-off at 6 p.m.
