Peacocks Dominate Dutch in Pella

The Peacock women's basketball team traveled to Pella, Iowa to renew an old Iowa Conference rivalry. Upper Iowa last played Central College during the 2003-04 season, the first of the Peacocks' two transitional years as they moved up to Division II athletics. Upper Iowa used a huge run to open the second half to run away from Central and win the game 73-36.

The Peacocks and Dutch struggled through the first half shooting just 25.7% and 24%, respectively, from the floor. Upper Iowa was able to hit four three-pointers in the first twenty minutes while Central did not hit a shot from beyond the arc. The visitors took a 27-18 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Upper Iowa outscored the Central 29-2 to open the second half to extend their lead to 24 points. The scoreboard showed the Peacocks with a 56-20 advantage with 8:24 to play in the game. The Dutch hit just 12.5% (4-32) from the floor in the second half and 17.5 percent for the night, while the Peacocks shot 54% (19-35) in the second half and finished the game at 40%.

The Peacocks' offensive attack was led by senior Ashley Martin, who hit 7 three-pointers. Martin finished with 21 points. Christa Hammel and Jodi Best also scored in double figures for Upper Iowa with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Eleven of the thirteen Peacocks that played made at least one shot.

Upper Iowa dominated the glass pulling down 64 rebounds to Central's 34. Hammel led the Peacock effort with 22 rebounds including 7 offensive boards. Hammel's work on the boards is second best in the program's history at Upper Iowa; the record is 28 rebounds in a game. Sara and Jodi Best worked hard to clean the glass as well snaring 11 and 9 rebounds, respectively.

Upper Iowa (2-4) will know travel out to Kearney, Nebraska to face Chadron State College and the University of Nebraska-Kearney in the UNK Thanksgiving Classic. The Peacocks will be back in Dorman Gymnasium on Monday night, Nov. 26, for a game against Waldorf College at 7 p.m.
