Upper Iowa went on the road for two NSIC matches in search of their first conference win of the season. The Peacocks faced the Golden Eagles of Minnesota, Crookston on Saturday and the Beavers of Bemidji State on Sunday. Unfortunately, the road team could not find that elusive first win. Upper Iowa lost to Crookston in three games and to Bemidji State in four games. The losses dropped the Peacocks record to 4-22 overall and 0-14 in the NSIC.
On Saturday the Peacocks were doubled up in the kill category. Crookston put home 56 balls, while Upper Iowa only managed 28 kills; the home team hit .314 for the match, while the visitors hit .065. The Peacocks lost the match in three games by the scores 30-18, 30-23, and 30-23. Darcy Hageman and Beth Deutmeyer led the offense with 10 and 8 kills, respectively, which was set up by Keri Vance, 13 assists, and Tatiana Jackson, 12 assists. Heidi Laitinen led the team in digs with 11, while Deutmeyer picked up 5 blocks. Keely Jones was effective at the service line with 3 aces.
On Sunday Upper Iowa recorded 62 kills, nine more than their opponents, but committed 37 attack errors compared to Bemidji's 26. The difference in the match came at the service line where the home team was able to record 12 service aces, while the visitors only tallied four. Bemidji State won the match in four games by the scores 30-26, 30-25, 26-30, 30-25. Four Peacocks registered double-digit kills; Jones (15), Hageman (13), Deutmeyer (11), and Meyermann (10). Kim Humpal also added 7 kills. Jackson set up the offense on the night with 36 assists. Meyermann led the defense in digs with 19, while Hageman and Jones added 18 and 14, respectively.
Upper Iowa will remain on the road next weekend traveling to Aberdeen, South Dakota to face the Wolves of Northern State and Bismarck, North Dakota to line up with the Marauders of the University of Mary. The match with Northern State is set for Friday, Oct. 26, at 7:00 p.m., while the contest with U-Mary is set for Saturday, Oct. 27, at 3:00 p.m. Both matches are available online via webcast at www.northernsun.tv.
