The Peacock women's soccer team hosted their final NSIC weekend of the 2007 season on Saturday and Sunday. Upper Iowa picked up wins over the Dragons of Minnesota State Moorhead and the Golden Bears of Concordia-St. Paul. The Peacocks have moved into sole possession of third place in the Northern Sun thanks to their current four game win streak. No one player stood out over the weekend, but the team, as it has all season, came together and played for each other. Four different Peacocks scored goals on the weekend and both goalies picked up wins as well.
On Saturday, the Peacocks hosted the Dragons and wasted no time putting their mark on the scoreboard. Erica Baedke scored the first goal in the 5th minute as she chipped the ball over the Dragon keeper's head from 12 yards away. Tiffany Whitcher picked up the assist on the opening goal. Cara Mauldin added a goal eight minutes later as she drove the ball to the back of the net from 8 yards away. Melissa Heitzman and the defense played well and only allowed 10 shots from MSU Moorhead; the Peacocks registered 28 on the day. Heitzman made 5 saves in the net for the Peacocks.
On Sunday, Upper Iowa welcomed the Golden Bears for their final home match of the regular season. Six seniors; Lauren Smith, Erica Baedke, Erin Rehfeldt, Jennifer Burnett, Candice Divoky, and Sarah Hiatt, all took the field playing in their final regular season home game at Pattison Field. Concordia stunned the home team with the first goal of the game in the 36th minute. The visitors took a 1-0 lead into the break. Upper Iowa came out of halftime with confidence and momentum began to turn their way. Amy Campbell tied the game in the 55th minute on a 10 yard strike that hit just inside the right post; Jennifer Lee handed out the assist. Candice Divoky put the Peacocks on top for good just six minutes later with an unassisted goal that the midfielder rolled under a diving keeper from 6 yards away. Sarah Hiatt made four saves in the net for Upper Iowa.
With the pair of wins, Upper Iowa improved its record to 11-6-1 overall and 5-1-1 in the NSIC. The Peacocks have put themselves in a great position to host their first round Northern Sun Conference Tournament game next Wednesday, Oct. 31. The team will travel to UM, Crookston and Bemidji State this weekend, Oct. 27-28, for their final two NSIC matches. Saturday and Sunday's games are scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
