Box Score
The Upper Iowa women's soccer team took care of business this weekend with two Northern Sun victories on the road. The team is now 9-6-1 overall and 3-1-1 in the NSIC thanks to wins at Southwest Minnesota State and Wayne State. The Peacocks defeated the Mustangs on Saturday by the score of 2-1 in double overtime and the Wildcats on Sunday by the score of 4-1.
The Peacocks avenged their earlier loss to the Mustangs with a thrilling double overtime victory. Lauren Smith opened the scoring in the 18th minute when she connected on a shot from the right side 30 yards out. Erica Baedke dished out the assist on the score. The Upper Iowa offense dominated the match with 40 shots to just 12 by Southwest Minnesota State, but the Mustang keeper, Kayla Borstad, kept her team in it by coming up with 19 saves on the day.
The home team was able to pull even after a foul gave the Mustangs a free kick from 25 yards away on the left side. Tatum Borstad was able to beat the Peacock keeper, Melissa Heitzman for the goal. Heitzman was good in net for the visitors as she only allowed the one goal while making four saves. The teams ended regulation and the first overtime knotted at 1-1.
As time ran out in the second overtime, Smith got free for the Peacocks and put the ball into the back of the net on a 20 yard drive from the left side. The goal was scored with 56 seconds left in the game and lifted the Peacocks to a victory. If the game had reached the end of the second overtime at 1-1, then it would have been declared a tie.
On Suday, UIU traveled to Wayne, Nebraska looking for their third NSIC win. The Wildcats got on the scoreboard first in the 2nd minute of the game when Gena Romano broke loose and drove a shot past the Peacock keeper, Sarah Hiatt, for the game's first goal.
The Peacocks evened the match one minute later as Jennifer Lee scored on a header in the box on a pass from the foot of Cara Mauldin. The Peacocks kept the pressure on with 10 shots in the first half but were unable to find the net again.
After halftime, the match turned into a one-sided affair. Amy Campbell scored three goals in the second half. The first came in the 60th minute as Campbell headed home a pass from Erica Baedke; the second came in the 64th minute when the Cary, Illinois native drove home a pass from Lauren Smith from 8 yards out; and the third came in the 69th minute when the sophomore midfielder put her head on a goal for the second time on a pass from Tiffany Whitcher. The hat trick gives Campbell 8 goals on the season.
The two wins moved Upper Iowa into a tie for third place in the NSIC with Bemidji State at 3-1-1. Upper Iowa will host its final two regular season home matches this weekend Oct. 20-21. The Peacocks will host the Dragons of Minnesota State Moorhead on Saturday and the Golden Bears of Concordia-St. Paul on Sunday. Both games are scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
