Upper Iowa University Athletics

Erin Bennek hit a whopping .714 in four games at home this weekend.  The senior shortstop went 10 for 14 at the plate while slugging 1.286 with a pair of doubles and two homeruns.  Bennek drove in 7 runs while scoring 6 times.  The Peacocks went 1-3 at home as they earned their second NSIC win of the season versus Northern State on Saturday.  Bennek’s average was at .359, but now stands at .402 (9^th in the NSIC) for the year after the outstanding weekend at the plate.

 

Upper Iowa lost a pair of 11-2 decisions to U-Mary on Friday before splitting their double header with Northern State on Saturday.  The Peacocks lost a heartbreaker in extra innings, 11-9 (8), but rallied in game two to take a 10-7 victory.  Bennek was not the only Peacock to hit well for UIU, Hannah Jones (Sr., LF, Waukon, Iowa) hit .583 over the weekend with seven hits including two doubles with two rbi’s and three runs scored.  Chelsey Sechrest (.385), Adrienna Olson (.357), Laura Tackenberg (.308), and Ashley Brown (.300) also had good averages at the plate, while Erin Van Praag delivered four rbi’s on Saturday.

 

The team will wrap up their 2011 season this week with four NSIC double headers.  The first two are at home; on Wednesday the Peacocks will take on Augustana and Thursday they will welcome Wayne State.  The Peacocks will be on the road for their final games of the season at Minnesota Duluth and Bemidji State on Saturday and Sunday.  The Peacocks' four seniors, Bennek, Jones, Sechrest, and Erica Maisto will be honored at Wednesday's double header against Augustana.
