The
Northern Sun Conference handed out their weekly awards and senior
Isabella Sella was named the NSIC Player of the Week in women's tennis for the second straight week. Sella led Upper Iowa to a pair of wins over Minnesota Duluth and St. Cloud State to remain undefeated (6-0) on the season. The award is Upper Iowa's sixth of the year; freshmen Haley Poula (volleyball) and Eric Munoz (football) were both recipients during the fall season, and redshirt senior Jordan Hay (men's basketball) and redshirt sophomore Damian Penichet (wrestling) was awarded during the winter.
Sella once again went 4-0 on the weekend at No. 1 doubles and singles to lead UIU to a pair of victories. The senior recorded a pair of doubles wins with
Linn Sorman winning 8-4 against UMD and 8-1 against SCSU. She improved to 6-0 on the season at No. 1 singles after winning 6-2, 7-5 against Shelby Benkofske of UMD and the 6-4, 6-0 over Abigail Kantor of SCSU.
The Peacocks kept their winning streak alive with a pair of NSIC wins on the road in Sartell, Minn. UIU defeated Minnesota Duluth 7-2 and then outlasted St. Cloud State 5-4 to close their trip. Upper Iowa won four of the six doubles matches taking a 2-1 lead into singles competition each dual. UIU won 8 of the 12 singles matches over the weekend as well, with five coming against the Bulldogs. In singles play, Sella,
Shakhnaza Zhanatova, and
Anna Okolot all won both of their singles matches. Sorman and
Kelly Jachymowski both went 1-1 in singles over the weekend. The dual with the Huskies came down to the match at No. 5 and UIU's Okolot secured the win 6-3, 6-2.
Upper Iowa has one match scheduled this week. The Peacocks will take the short trip to Waterloo, Iowa to face the Panthers of Northern Iowa, one of Iowa's four NCAA Division I institutions, at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Mar. 4.
