Upper Iowa opened their 2014 season well with three wins at the Keweenaw Classic in Houghton, Mich. hosted by Michigan Tech. The Peacocks defeated Northern Michigan and Michigan Tech in five sets on the first day. On day two, UIU won a four-set match with Lake Superior State before falling in their final match of the weekend, 3-2, to UW-Parkside. Senior libero Amanda Weiss surpassed the 1,000-dig mark on day one and now has 1,050 in her career. Senior setter Hailey Brown was a stat-filler for the Peacocks posting three triple-doubles (kills-digs-assists) over the weekend and she only needed two more kills against Northern Michigan for the rare feat to have occurred in all four matches. Jennifer Mundt led the offense with 79 kills and added 57 digs to post a trio of double-doubles, while Tyann Caspers added 42 kills and Brown chipped in 39. Jenna Hermsen came in as the team’s second setter and earned 79 assists and 64 digs, while Alisha VanderWoude (10 blocks) and Haylie Franklin (16 blocks) defended the net with a combined 26 denials.
