Iris Verweij gave up only one point in doubles play and four points in singles competition this past weekend en route to a 4-0 record. Her strong play led the Peacocks to a pair of victories over NSIC-foes Bemidji State and Minnesota Duluth as UIU picked up its first weekend sweep of the season. At #1 doubles, Verweij and her partner Saki Kawabata earned an 8-1 victory over BSU before collecting a dominating 8-0 victory on Sunday over UMD. In singles play, Verweij dropped four points to her BSU opponent, but picked up a pair of wins, 6-3 and 6-1. Then on Sunday against UMD, Verweij was unstoppable in a pair of 6-0 wins.
Just past the mid-way point of the Northern Sun season, the Upper Iowa women's tennis team accomplished something they haven't all season – a weekend sweep in NSIC play. With a 7-2 win over Bemidji State on Saturday and a 6-3 victory over Minnesota Duluth on Sunday, the Peacocks improved to 4-2 in NSIC play this season and have now won three matches in a row. Iris Verweij, Saki Kawabata (So., 4-9, Osaka, Japan/Osaka Sangyo HS) and Victoria Kulbokas (Fr., 5-6, Hickory Hills, Ill./Amos Alonzo Stagg HS) all earned flawless 4-0 records over the weekend. Combined, that trio has lost only three times this year as each owns a 5-1 record in 2014. The Peacocks will take the next five days off before heading to Moorhead, Minnesota to face U-Mary and MSU Moorhead next Saturday and Sunday.
