Logan Hopp capped off his best day as a Peacock with four wins by fall in four matches at the Chuck Porter Duals in Galesburg, Ill. The Peacock wrestlers went 35-5 in their four duals while claiming the championship with a 4-0 dual record. Hopp's four pins came in a total time of 8:01. The redshirt freshman has wrestled well as a heavyweight this season with a record of 17-9 with 7 falls and 3 major decisions.
Upper Iowa, which just moved up to #10 in the NWCA Division II Coaches Poll, posted a pair of shutouts on Saturday afternoon en route to a perfect 4-0 mark and the Chuck Porter Duals title. In total, the Peacock grapplers combined for a 35-5 record on the day in the team's final tune up before next weekend's high-powered NWCA National Duals in Des Moines, Iowa. The Peacocks' pair of shutouts came in the opening two duals over Hannibal-LaGrange University, 58-0, and Calumet College of St. Joesph, 57-0. UIU followed it up with a 33-6 win over Augustana College (Ill.), who is ranked #30 in NCAA Division III, to close out their pool competition and then defeated Wabash College, ranked #10 in NCAA Division III, 36-9 in the championship match. In addition to Hopp’s four pins, Carl Broghammer won all four of his matches in impressive fashion. He won three matches by fall and one by technical fall to improve to 22-2 overall with 13 wins by fall, 2 tech falls and a major decision.
The Peacocks will head to Des Moines, Iowa and the Iowa Events Center to compete in the NWCA National Duals on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 11-12. Upper Iowa has placed in the top eight in five of the last six years at the National Duals. Last season, the Peacocks placed sixth with a 3-2 record.
